Do you need an apostille, and can we do it?

Apostille rules are fiddly, so we turned them into three quick questions. Answer them and we'll tell you straight.

1. Where was the document issued?

Is this you?

The Portuguese documents people apostille most

If an authority outside Portugal asked for one of these "with apostille", this is the service.

✓

Birth, marriage and death certificates

Home-country registries, inheritance cases, and foreign authorities handling family matters.

✓

Criminal record certificate (registo criminal)

Immigration authorities, employers and licensing bodies outside Portugal. The electronic version with a verification code is fully valid for apostille.

✓

Notarised documents and powers of attorney

Documents certified in Portugal that now need to work abroad. If yours isn't certified yet, we handle both steps.

✓

Court decisions

Portuguese divorce decrees and judgments being recognised in another country.

✓

Diplomas and transcripts

Portuguese qualifications going to foreign universities and credential evaluators.

✓

Company and registry certificates

Portuguese commercial registry extracts for foreign banks and business registrations.

Not sure your document qualifies? Answer the three questions above, or message us before ordering.

How it works

How to get an apostille in Portugal, in four steps

Portugal now issues fully electronic apostilles for digital documents, and most Portuguese certificates can be issued digitally with a verification code. So you usually don't post anything.

1

Submit your document

Place your order then upload your document and tell us where it was issued and which country it's going to.

2

We check it and confirm the route

You pass a quick online identity check from your phone. Then the lawyer verifies the document qualifies and picks the fastest path: electronic apostille for digital documents, or the in-person route for paper ones. If the original document has to travel, we tell you exactly where to send it before anything starts.

3

The apostille is issued

The Portuguese competent authority, the Procuradoria-Geral da República, applies the apostille to your document.

4

Receive your apostilled document

Typically within about a week. Electronic apostilles arrive by email, ready to use. Want a paper original posted? Delivery from €30 depending on where you are.

Honest limits

What this service can't do

We can't apostille documents issued outside Portugal, because nobody in Portugal can. Your FBI check gets apostilled in the US, your ACRO certificate in the UK.

If your destination country isn't in the Hague Convention, an apostille isn't the right instrument at all. Those cases need consular legalisation, which runs through the destination country's embassy. We'll flag it and point you the right way.

We don't translate documents. If the receiving authority wants a sworn translation on top of the apostille, that's a separate step we don't currently provide.

FAQ

Apostille questions

A standard certificate, under the 1961 Hague Convention, that one country attaches to a document so another member country accepts it as genuine without further legalisation. It authenticates the document’s origin, not its content.
The document, or its digital version with the verification code, plus the passport or ID you’ll use for the online identity check and an email address.
Everything for one document: the eligibility check, the lawyer arranging the apostille with the Portuguese authority, the state fee, and delivery of the electronic apostille by email. Posting a paper original to you is the only extra, from €30 depending on where you are.
No, and neither can anyone else in Portugal. An apostille can only come from the country that issued the document, so US documents are apostilled by US authorities and UK documents by the UK’s. This service is for documents issued in Portugal.
Often not. EU Regulation 2016/1191 exempts many public documents, including civil status and criminal record certificates, from apostille when presented to public authorities in another member state. But the exemption doesn’t bind private institutions like banks, and it doesn’t cover diplomas, notarised documents or registry extracts. Just tell us the destination and who’s asking and we’ll give you a straight answer before you spend the €99.
Usually not. Digital Portuguese documents with a verification code get a fully electronic apostille, and many Portuguese certificates can be issued that way. If your document only exists on paper, the original does need to reach the issuing authority, and we’ll tell you exactly how before anything starts.
Typically about a week once we’ve confirmed the route and have what we need. If your document first needs notarising, add the notarisation turnaround of 2–3 business days on top.
Yes, but private documents can’t go straight to apostille. The rule is notarise first, then apostille. Order the notarisation service and add the apostille there, and the lawyer handles both steps in one flow.
No. Electronic stamps and verification codes on official documents are legally valid for apostille, and digital documents actually take the faster electronic route.
