Who is this Portuguese bank account for?

We help three kinds of people open this account: Golden Visa investors who need a custody account for their fund units, D7, D8 and D2 applicants the usual banks won't take yet, and non-residents who need a Portuguese IBAN without moving here. It's opened remotely, for €500, in about 2 to 3 weeks on a complete file.

One holder / joint account, opened remotely

Portuguese banks are built for people who already live in Portugal. If you don't yet, you find out fast. The bank that won't take a non-resident NIF. The bank that wants a visa appointment before it opens the account, while the consulate wants the account before it gives you the appointment. The Golden Visa fund that needs a custody account, and the bank that doesn't do custody for your passport.

None of that says anything about you. It's a system that wasn't written with you in mind. This account was.

  • Your account is held with a licensed Portuguese bank, supervised by the Bank of Portugal
  • Cash deposits covered up to €100,000 by the Portuguese Deposit Guarantee Fund
  • Documents certified by a licensed Portuguese lawyer
  • No trip to Portugal

How does custody work for a Golden Visa fund investment?

A Golden Visa fund investment needs a custody account in your name to hold the fund units, and this account combines that custody account with a current account and a Portuguese IBAN. You move the money and hold the investment in one place, and the bank confirms the investment in writing for your Golden Visa file.

What custody means, in plain terms

When you invest in a Golden Visa fund, you don't end up with cash in an account. You end up with fund units. Units are securities, and securities have to sit in a custody account in your name, held by a bank that's allowed to look after them.

A normal current account can't hold units. A custody account on its own can't receive a wire or pay a bill. This account does both jobs: a custody account for your fund units, and a current account with a Portuguese IBAN for your euros. Our custody account guide walks through it step by step, with the fee at each stage.

How the money moves

  1. We open the account. You'll need a Portuguese NIF first. If you don't have one, we can get it for you.
  2. You send your investment from your home bank, in euros. Convert before you send. Money that arrives in another currency is converted at a 0.60% spread, which is about €3,000 on €500,000.
  3. You subscribe to your fund from the account. The euros leave the current account and go to the fund.
  4. Your units land in your custody account. They're registered in your name at a Portuguese bank, which is what the Golden Visa application needs to see.
  5. The bank confirms your investment in writing. It issues the declaration for your Golden Visa file: €75 plus VAT within 3 working days, or €200 plus VAT for next day.
  6. You pay your AIMA fees from the same IBAN. No second Portuguese account needed.

Things investors ask us early

“Do I need the full €500,000 in place before opening?” No. Open the account first and move the money when you're ready. While your assets with the bank are under €100,000, it charges an account fee of about €130 a quarter. Once your units are registered, you're over that line and the fee stops.

“Am I tied to one fund manager?” No. The account works with any fund registered with the CMVM, Portugal's securities regulator. We don't choose your fund and we don't give investment advice.

“Does every fund need this?” It depends on the fund. Some funds take your money from abroad straight into their own client account. Others will only accept a transfer from a Portuguese account in your name. Ask your fund how it takes the money before you decide. If yours takes it directly and holds the units for you, you may not need this account at all. Our guide lists the three questions to ask your fund.

“I'm a US citizen. Is that a problem?” Some Portuguese banks won't hold fund units for US persons, because of US tax reporting rules. This bank does, and we've opened accounts here for US Golden Visa clients. Those same rules stop US persons trading stocks and bonds through the account, which doesn't affect a fund investment.

Why we moved our Golden Visa clients here

Confession: we used to send Golden Visa clients to one of Portugal's big retail banks. On one US case it turned into round after round of extra document requests, and the account opening dragged on while the client waited.

We stopped. Every Golden Visa client of ours now opens this account, whatever their nationality. The bank specialises in investment clients and knows what a Golden Visa file needs from it.

Can I open a Portuguese bank account without a visa appointment?

Yes. This bank doesn't ask for proof of a visa appointment, so D7, D8 and D2 applicants can open the account before their consulate appointment. It assesses each applicant case by case, under its own checks, and gives you a Portuguese IBAN with statements for your visa file.

The loop

You requested the consulate appointment in September. The reply asked for proof of accommodation and a Portuguese bank account. You emailed a bank. The bank asked for proof of your visa appointment.

You've read both emails more times than you'd like to admit.

Or you started looking at banks online. One wanted you resident in Portugal before it would open anything. Another wouldn't accept a non-resident NIF at sign-up. A third told you to visit its branch in your home country with apostilled documents.

How this account gets you out

This bank looks at you and your money. It accepts documents in English, Portuguese, French or Spanish as they are. Other languages need a certified translation, and we tell you which documents those are before the bank sees anything.

What you get is a current account in euros at a licensed Portuguese bank, with a Portuguese IBAN and statements you can put in your visa file. If your consulate asks for a bank-certified statement, the bank issues one for €50 plus VAT.

The consulate decides your visa on your whole file. Nobody can promise the outcome. What the account does is take the bank line off your checklist.

Can a non-resident open a Portuguese bank account without moving?

Yes. This account is opened from abroad and doesn't need you to be resident in Portugal, so property buyers and others who are staying where they are can still have a Portuguese IBAN.

You're buying a flat in Lisbon or a house in the Algarve, and you're staying where you are. Or you need euros in Portugal for another reason, and the retail banks want you resident here first, or in a branch to sign. You can use the account to:

  • pay the deposit and the deed in euros from a Portuguese IBAN
  • set up direct debits for IMI, water, electricity and condominium fees
  • receive rent in euros if you let the property out

Two honest points before you order.

The bank charges about €130 a quarter while your assets with it are under €100,000. For a property buyer who keeps a small working balance, that's around €520 a year. A retail bank is usually cheaper to run once you're eligible for one.

And you'll need a Portuguese NIF first, the same as for anything else here.

What's included in the €500 account opening?

The €500 covers everything between you and an open account: the introduction to the bank, our document check, certification by our partner lawyer and delivery to the bank in Lisbon. A joint account is €600.

Included

  • An introduction to the bank's partner team, who assign you a client officer
  • A check of your documents in our secure portal before they go to the bank
  • Certification of your documents by our partner lawyer in Portugal
  • Delivery of the certified set to the bank in Lisbon
  • Support on your order thread until the account is open

Not included

  • The NIF. You need a Portuguese tax number before the bank can open anything. If you don't have one, order it first (€79).
  • Translations. Documents in other languages need a certified translation. We send you a list of Portuguese translation companies we've used, and you arrange it with them directly.
  • The bank's own questions. The bank's portal asks about your work, your income and where your money comes from. Only you can answer those, so you answer them directly.
  • Fund selection, investment or tax advice. We don't give any of these. For the tax side of moving, book the tax consultation (€99).
  • The visa application itself. For D7, D8 and D2, see the visa packages. For a quick legal opinion on your case, our partner lawyer does 45-minute consultations (€80).

How does the account opening work, step by step?

There are five stages, and you do them all from home: getting started, the bank's portal, the bank's review, certification, then signature and activation. These are the same five stages we use in every update on your order. Around 2 to 3 weeks on a complete file.

1. Getting started

You order and fill in a short form. We introduce you to the bank, which runs a quick pre-check, usually within a few days. It asks for a few basic details, including a phone number for its security text messages.

At the same time, you upload your documents to our secure portal and we check them before the bank sees them. If anything needs fixing or translating, you hear it from us now rather than from the bank weeks later.

2. The bank's portal

Once your documents are ready, the bank sends you its own secure link and PIN. You answer its questions about your work, your income and where your money comes from, and upload your documents there. These questions are about you, so you answer them yourself.

3. The bank reviews your documents

The bank checks your set and may ask follow-up questions in its portal. You answer them there and upload a new version if it asks for one. A request on the first round is normal.

4. Certification

Our partner lawyer certifies your approved documents in Portugal and we send the certified set to the bank in Lisbon.

“The bank's portal says my documents need certifying. Do I have to do that?” No. That list is for us. Our partner lawyer certifies them from your scans, and there's nothing for you to post.

5. Signature and activation

You download the bank's account documents from its portal, initial every page, sign the last one and upload them back. Signing on a tablet is fine, so there's nothing to print. Your signature has to match the one on your passport, with no corrections. The bank then runs a final check and activates your account.

Translations and complicated source-of-funds questions add time.

Joint accounts open in two steps. The first holder's account opens online, as above. The second holder is then added on paper: they post the bank's original forms to Lisbon, and that takes about two weeks more.

Is this private bank account right for you?

It's right for you if you need custody for Golden Visa fund units, a Portuguese account before your visa appointment, or a Portuguese IBAN while you live abroad. It's the wrong account for everyday banking once you live here.

A good fit if

  • you're investing in a Golden Visa fund that needs a custody account in your name
  • you're applying for a D7, D8 or D2 visa and the bank that wants your appointment first is holding you up
  • you're not resident in Portugal and need a Portuguese IBAN for property or other costs here
  • you can show where your money comes from: pay slips or an employer letter, investment statements, or similar

Not the right fit if

  • you want an everyday account for salary, rent and bills once you live here. A retail bank does that better and cheaper. Our standard bank account service (€300) suits most residents and visa applicants whose nationality it covers.
  • your Golden Visa fund takes the money directly and holds the units for you
  • you can't document where your money comes from. The bank will ask, and the decision is the bank's.

What does the account cost to open and run?

Our fee is €500 for one holder or €600 for a joint account. The bank charges about €130 a quarter while your assets with it are under €100,000, and nothing once you're over. Golden Visa investors pay custody on their fund units instead.

If the bank doesn't accept youWe refund 50% of our fee: €250 one holder, €300 joint

The bank also charges a transaction fee when you subscribe to a fund, set out in its price list.

VAT on our fee depends on your billing address. Billing addresses outside the EU pay no VAT. Use the billing address that matches your card.

Two worked examples for one holder

  • Golden Visa investor, €500,000 in a fund: €500 to us, then about €154 a quarter in custody fees once the units are in. The account fee stops once your assets pass €100,000.
  • Visa applicant with less than €100,000 in the account: €500 to us, plus about €520 a year in the bank's account fee.

The account fee runs on calendar quarters, and the first quarter is charged in full. Opening late in a quarter means paying a whole quarter for a few weeks. Don't let that hold up a visa request. A month lost on your appointment costs more.

Who checks your file, and who decides?

Our partner lawyer certifies your documents, our team checks them before the bank sees them, and the bank alone decides whether to open the account.

Our partner lawyer certifies your documents. Lawyers in Portugal are registered with the Portuguese Bar Association and bound by its rules.

The bank is licensed and supervised by the Bank of Portugal. Cash deposits are covered by the Portuguese Deposit Guarantee Fund up to €100,000 per depositor, whether or not you live in Portugal.

Our team reviews your documents before the bank sees them. Everything we do for you happens on your order thread, in writing.

The bank makes its own decision on every account. We can't promise approval. What we can do is make sure the file it sees is complete and correct.

If the bank turns your application down, we refund half our fee: €250 for one holder, €300 for a joint account.

What else do people ask about this account?

Which bank is it?+

A licensed private bank in Lisbon that works with investors and international clients. Ask us in the chat, or we name it as soon as you order.

What if the bank doesn't accept me?+

We refund 50% of our fee: €250 for one holder, €300 for a joint account, back to the card you paid with. The bank makes its own decision on every account, so we can't promise approval.

Do I need to come to Portugal or post anything?+

No. You upload documents and complete the bank's portal online, and our partner lawyer certifies your documents in Portugal. The one exception is a joint account: the second holder posts the bank's original forms to Lisbon.

What documents will the bank ask for?+

Your Portuguese NIF, your passport, a utility bill or bank statement under six months old showing your address, proof of your work and income, a statement showing a balance or portfolio of at least the amount you plan to bring in, and your tax number from your home country.

I'm employed now but I'll live on investments later. What do I show?+

Your situation as it is today. If you're employed, that's your last three pay slips or a letter from your employer. If you already live on investments, a brokerage statement and a short note on how you built those savings usually does it. We check your set before it goes to the bank.

My documents aren't in English. What do I do?+

English, Portuguese, French and Spanish are accepted as they are. Other languages need a certified translation, usually quickest done in Portugal. We tell you which documents are affected when we review them.

What if the bank asks for something else?+

It tells you in its portal, you upload a new version, and the review carries on. A request on the first round is normal.

Can the account hold my Golden Visa fund units?+

Yes. That's what the custody side is for. Your units are registered in your name in the account, and the bank issues the declaration your Golden Visa application needs.

Will the consulate accept the account for my D7, D8 or D2?+

It's a standard current account at a licensed Portuguese bank, with a Portuguese IBAN, and its statements are Portuguese bank statements. The consulate decides your visa on your whole file, so nobody can promise the outcome.

How much do I need to deposit?+

There's no minimum to open. For a visa, deposit what your visa type needs. For a Golden Visa, the fund sets the investment amount. Our partner lawyer covers the exact figures for your case in a consultation or in your visa package.

Is there a card?+

The bank offers an optional reloadable Visa card through a third-party card provider, with its own small annual fee. It isn't available to residents of every country. Many clients add an everyday bank card once they've moved.

Is my money safe?+

Cash deposits are covered by the Portuguese Deposit Guarantee Fund up to €100,000 per depositor. Fund units in custody are registered in your name. Money loaded onto the optional card sits with the card provider under e-money rules, outside the deposit guarantee.

Can I close it later?+

Yes, and closing is free. If you hold it for a visa or a Golden Visa, check with our partner lawyer first whether you still need it at the residence permit or renewal stage.

How long does it take?+

Around 2 to 3 weeks from introduction to an open account on a complete file. Translations and a complicated source-of-funds history add time.
