Your NIF Tax Representative Service:

Renewal Time

Your 12-month fiscal representation service is ending soon

Renew now to keep your fiscal representation service active.

Watch This Quick Overview

Important: What happens to your Portuguese tax mail if you don’t renew—and why you need to decide now.

What's Happening

When you got your NIF with Novomove, we included 12 months of fiscal representation service at no extra cost. That period is ending soon, and you need to make a decision to keep the service active.

Here’s how the service works:

Your Fiscal Representative is a Portuguese Lawyer

Your NIF is registered with one of our partner lawyers as your fiscal representative. All your Portuguese tax correspondence is sent to their address.

Novomove Manages Your Fiscal Representation Service

We act as the liaison between you and your fiscal representative, managing all correspondence and ensuring you receive scanned documents within 24 hours. We keep the service relationship active and handle all administrative aspects.

When Your Service Expires

When your service with Novomove expires, the active service relationship ends. Our partner lawyer will then begin the legally required renunciation process by sending a formal notice to your last known address and informing the Portuguese Tax Authority (AT). Following a legally defined period, the AT will process the removal, leaving you without a fiscal representative on record.

What you continue to get:

Guaranteed Access to All Tax Correspondence

Every piece of mail that arrives at your fiscal representative's address—IMI assessments, payment deadlines, vehicle taxes, notices from Finanças—is scanned and forwarded to you within 24 hours.

Why this matters: Most critical tax documents in Portugal are still sent by physical registered mail to your fiscal representative’s address. Without our forwarding service, you won’t have access to these documents.

Complete Mail Management

Never Miss a Tax Deadline

Portuguese tax payment windows typically give you 30-50 days to respond. With our service, you receive notices immediately so you always have time to act.

One Missed Deadline Costs More Than 2 Years of Service

Late payment penalties start at €150+ and compound with interest. Missing one IMI payment costs more than two years of our €79 annual fee.

Essential for Property Owners

Your annual IMI (property tax) assessment is sent by registered mail to your fiscal representative's address. Without our service, you won't have access to this notice and risk missing payment deadlines.

Critical for Vehicle Owners

Annual circulation tax notices (IUC) are sent by mail to your fiscal representative's address. Our service ensures you receive these notices immediately.

Peace of Mind for €6.58/Month

Never worry about missing critical correspondence. We ensure you have access to everything—you just handle payments when needed.

Renewal Takes 5 Minutes

Your service continues for another 12 months.

What Happens If You Don't Renew?

If you do not take action by the deadline that was communicated to you, our partner lawyer is legally required to begin the formal renunciation process to comply with Portuguese law.

This involves sending a legal notice of renunciation to your last known address via registered mail.

After a legally stipulated period, the AT will process the removal, and you will no longer have a fiscal representative on record.

At that point, all physical tax mail will be sent directly to your foreign address. This puts you at significant risk of missing critical notices due to unreliable international postal services, which can lead to fines and other legal complications.

Common Questions

Is this just a mail forwarding service?

No, it’s a formal legal appointment. A fiscal representative is officially registered with the Portuguese Tax Authority as your legal point of contact in Portugal. While the service includes forwarding critical tax mail, the representative’s primary role is to fulfill a legal requirement and ensure you are officially contactable by the AT for any legal or tax matter. A standard mail forwarding service does not meet this legal requirement.

Yes, if you have tax obligations in Portugal (e.g., you own property or earn income), it is highly recommended.

The Portuguese Tax Authority still sends certain high-importance documents
exclusively via physical mail, and these notices do not appear in your online portal. This includes annual property tax (IMI) bills, official tax assessments, and formal audit notifications.

Renewing your fiscal representation is the only way to guarantee 100% reliable receipt of this critical mail.

If you have officially updated your address with the Tax Authority to a Portuguese one, you no longer need a fiscal representative. However, to finalize the process with us, you must provide proof of this change.

Please follow our cancellation guide and submit your updated
Certificate of Tax Residence (Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal) so we can update our records and inform our partner lawyer.
