Paper forms, envelopes and a fountain pen on a wooden desk — the Portal das Finanças password still arrives on paper, by post

How to Recover Your Portal das Finanças Password (Every Route, Explained)

Most people arrive at this after trying the obvious things. There is no “forgot password” email, the security question was set years ago by somebody else, and the forums contradict each other.

The process is not complicated once you know which version of it applies to you. It is just badly explained, and getting it wrong costs you weeks rather than minutes.

First, check you have not already got it

A lot of people who cannot log in never lost the password. If you got your NIF through a service provider, it almost certainly arrived as a PDF and is sitting in an old email or an order thread.

Look there before you start. Recovering a password takes weeks. Finding the PDF takes five minutes.

Which route is yours

Everything turns on two questions. Do you remember the security question you chose when you registered, and if not, do you know which email address the tax office holds against your NIF.

Answer in order — stop at your first yes
1

You have Chave Móvel Digital, or a Cartão de Cidadão with authentication codes. Set a new password now

2

You remember your security question. Recover it yourself

3

You do not remember it, but you know the email address registered with the tax office. Email them, no attachments

If you have Chave Móvel Digital or Cartão de Cidadão

Authenticate through Autenticação.gov and set a new password on the spot. Nothing gets posted and nothing takes weeks.

Worth knowing even if this is not you yet. Chave Móvel Digital is open to foreign nationals, not only Portuguese citizens, and setting it up turns every future password problem into a two minute job instead of a month of waiting. If you are at the start of a long postal recovery, it is often worth getting the CMD first and skipping the queue entirely.

We have a full walkthrough here: Chave Móvel Digital for foreigners, and how to get it in Portugal.

If you remember your security question

Go to the password recovery page, enter your NIF, then the question and your answer.

If you have already verified your mobile number with the tax office, choose the SMS option. A six digit code arrives, you have five minutes to enter it, and you set a new password immediately.

If your mobile is not verified, the old password is cancelled and a new one goes out by post to your registered tax address. Check that address first.

If you know the registered email but not the security question

Email portal-senhas@at.gov.pt, and it has to come from the exact address the tax office holds against your NIF. Sending from a different one will not work.

Subject line, with your own number
Cancelamento de senha NIF 123456789
Body — three lines and nothing else
NIF: Nome Completo: Domicílio Fiscal:
Before you hit send

Do not type your current home address in that third line. It has to match what the tax office holds, and it decides where your new password gets posted. More on this below, and it is worth reading before you send anything.

No attachments on this route. The tax office replies to confirm the password has been cancelled.

If you know neither

This is where most non-residents end up, particularly anyone whose NIF was set up by a representative who registered their own email address rather than the client’s.

You have two options. Go to a Serviço de Finanças in person and have your email updated, which is fine if you are in Portugal and not much use if you are not. Or, where a tax deadline is at stake, email portal-senhas@at.gov.pt from any address.

Same subject line and same three lines in the body, fiscal address included and checked. This time you attach two things:

  • A scan of your identification document, which is what proves the request is yours
  • A signed request asking for the password to be cancelled

That second attachment is where people go wrong. It is a separate document that you write, print, sign by hand and scan. It is not the email printed out. This wording works:

[signature]
[full name]

The step almost everybody misses

Read this bit twice

Cancelling your old password does not produce a new one.

Once the tax office confirms the cancellation by email, a fresh registration has to be made on the Portal using the “Registar-se” option. Only that triggers a new password.

So if you send the email, get your confirmation, and then wait for a letter, nothing will ever arrive. The confirmation is halfway, not the finish.

If you have a tax representative on your NIF, this second step is usually theirs to do rather than yours. Ask them, because doing it twice creates its own mess.

Check your tax address before you start

The one that costs you a month

Every postal route sends the password to your domicílio fiscal, meaning the tax address the tax office holds. Not the address you live at, and not the one you type into the email.

If what they hold is old or wrong, the letter goes there, you wait a month for nothing, and you start again from the beginning.

The tax office flags this twice in its own guidance, which for a government FAQ is close to shouting. Check it first.

You will find it on your NIF certificate. Copy it into the email exactly as printed rather than retyping it from memory, and if you are not sure which field it is, our guide to the NIF certificate walks through what each box means.

Where a tax representative is appointed on your NIF, correspondence is directed through them. That is what the appointment is for. They receive the letter and pass the password on to you. Your representative is listed on the same certificate under Representante.

How long it really takes

Tax office average
5 working days
What we actually see
3 to 4 weeks

Five working days is the tax office’s own published average. In practice we see closer to three to four weeks before the letter reaches a representative’s office here in Portugal.

That gap is the tax office being slow to issue and send, not the post. Nothing you do at your end changes it, so plan around three to four weeks rather than five days and treat anything faster as a bonus.

There is no expedited option and no way to have a password emailed. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

If you changed tax representative

This one has a trap in it. If a previous representative already requested a password against your NIF, a new one cannot be issued while that one exists, even if nobody ever gave it to you and nobody can find it now.

The old password has to be cancelled first, using the email process above. Only you can do that, because the tax office needs your identification document and your signature before it will accept the request. Your new representative cannot send it for you.

Once the cancellation comes through, they can take it from there.

If the NIF belongs to a company

For a company NIPC the recovery runs on the security question, and the password is posted to the registered office rather than to a director.

If the company was set up through Empresa na Hora, a password was generated automatically at incorporation and posted to the registered office at the time. Plenty of founders never see it, because it arrived before anyone was collecting post at that address. If that sounds familiar, you are recovering a password you were issued and never received, not requesting a first one.

Where the registered email is unknown, this goes through your Contabilista Certificado. They submit a declaration of changes carrying the new email or phone number, either through the Portal or at a tax office.

Where people go wrong

  • Sending the cancellation email from the wrong address when the tax office expects it from the one on their record
  • Printing and signing the email instead of attaching a separate signed request
  • Writing their current home address in the fiscal domicile line rather than the address the tax office holds
  • Stopping at the cancellation confirmation and never completing the new registration
  • Assuming a Portal login means electronic notifications are switched on, when it is a separate opt-in and plenty of notices still go out only on paper

Once you are back in, it is worth setting a password you will actually remember and noting the security question somewhere safe. We have a short guide on changing your Portal das Finanças password for that.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Portal das Finanças password be emailed to me?

No. There is no reset link and no expedited option. A new password is printed on paper and posted to the fiscal address (domicílio fiscal) the tax office holds against your NIF, or to your tax representative if one is appointed. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

How long does password recovery take?

The tax office’s own published average is 5 working days. In practice we see closer to 3 to 4 weeks before the letter reaches a representative’s office in Portugal. That gap is the tax office being slow to issue and send, not the post — nothing you do at your end changes it.

I cancelled my old password but no letter arrived. Why?

Cancelling the old password does not produce a new one. After the tax office confirms the cancellation by email, a fresh registration has to be made on the Portal using the “Registar-se” option. Only that triggers a new password. If you have a tax representative, that second step is usually theirs to do — ask them before doing it yourself.

Can I recover the password without remembering my security question?

Yes. Email portal-senhas@at.gov.pt. If it comes from the exact address the tax office holds against your NIF, no attachments are needed. From any other address, attach a scan of your identification document and a separate signed cancellation request — a document you write, print, sign by hand and scan, not the email printed out.

What is the fastest way back into Portal das Finanças?

Chave Móvel Digital, or a Cartão de Cidadão with authentication codes. Authenticate through Autenticação.gov and set a new password on the spot — nothing gets posted. CMD is open to foreign nationals too; here is how to get it.

My old representative requested a password I never received. Can my new one request a fresh one?

Not while the old password exists, even if nobody can find it now. It has to be cancelled first using the email process, and only you can send that request, because the tax office needs your identification document and your signature. Once the cancellation comes through, your new representative can take it from there.

How do I recover a company’s password?

For a company NIPC the recovery runs on the security question, and the password is posted to the registered office. Companies set up through Empresa na Hora were issued a password automatically at incorporation — often before anyone was collecting post at that address. Where the registered email is unknown, it goes through your Contabilista Certificado via a declaration of changes.

Where will the new password be posted?

To the domicílio fiscal the tax office holds against your NIF — not the address you live at, and not the one you type into the email. If a tax representative is appointed, the letter goes through them instead. Check the address on your NIF certificate before starting; our certificate guide shows which field it is.
